Dave Chappelle’s alma mater postpones fundraiser amidst controversy

The Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C. has postponed alumnus and stand-up comedian, Dave Chappelle’s appearance at the school. Students at the high school threatened a walkout following Chappelle’s remarks on the transgender community in his Netflix special, “the Closer.” p

The fundraiser, originally set for November 23, was canceled following a heated debate between faculty and students, according to Politico Playbook. Shortly after, the school opted to postpone the event until April 22.

“We recognize that not everyone will accept or welcome a particular artist’s point of view, product or craft, but reject the notion that a ‘cancel culture’ is a healthy or constructive means to teach our students how society should balance creative freedom with protecting the right and dignity of all of its members,” said the high school, according to Politico Playbook.
