Despite the series’ best efforts the reboot has officially been canceled. Hilary Duff would’ve starred in the series and reprised her role from the 2001-4 Disney Channel series. But, in an Instagram post on Wednesday Duff said, “I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly and despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen,” and that “the stars just didn’t align” for this project.
The series was originally announced in August 2019 a few months prior to Disney+ launching. The series creator and showrunner, Terri Minsky, left in January 2020 after filming two episodes. A new showrunner was never hired after that. Following the decision to cancel the series Disney made a statement saying, “‘Lizzie McGuire’ fans have high expectations for any new stories. Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series.”
