‘The Crown’ on Netflix has decided that they will not be adding a disclaimer that the show is fictionalized at the beginning. U.K. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden who is also a member of Parliament since 2015 both publicly and privately asked Netflix for the disclaimer. Publicly saying he worries about “a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”
Netflix responded publicly saying, “We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama – and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” and “As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.” We also know there was a letter exchange that was kept private. This has also become more and more of an issue as the series gets closer to modern day especially with the storyline of Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
