Russell Wilson, Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird to Host Remote ESPYs

With consideration of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s sports awards ceremony will emphasize heroism and humanitarian aid.

The two-hour ESPN broadcast on June 21st will be hosted by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, soccer star Megan Rapinoe, and three-time WNBA champion Sue Bird. In past years, the ESPYs have taken place in July, but this year the event has been rescheduled and re-imagined due to the pandemic. Instead of long speeches read off of the teleprompter, winners will receive calls informing them of their award at the same time the viewers find out, which will then be displayed on a video screen.

“In the not-too-distant future after the show airs, we’ll see a return to live sports that will drive a sense of hope,” said Rob King, ESPN senior vice president and editor at large. “We hope to have this show be really reflective of that.”
